Celebrating Excellence: Presentation Evening 2024
A night of recognition, reflection, and celebration, as we honoured the outstanding achievements of our cadets and volunteers.
After a pause from 2020 to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2497 (Cosford) Squadron proudly hosted its annual Presentation Evening this year. The event celebrated the exceptional achievements of our cadets and volunteers while reflecting on the squadron’s progress over the past 12 months. Attended by parents, carers, cadets, and distinguished guests, it was an inspiring night filled with music, awards, and heartfelt speeches.
The evening began with a fanfare to welcome our Guest of Honour, Vice-Lord Lieutenant Jenny Wynn OBE DL, who expressed her admiration for the dedication and resilience of our cadets and volunteers. The squadron band set the tone with an impressive opening performance, showcasing the talent and hard work of our young musicians.
Our host for the evening, Mr Ryan Phillips, Volunteer and Trustee, opened with a summary of the squadron’s journey over the past few years, reflecting on the challenges overcome and the accomplishments achieved. A total of 40 members of our squadron were nominated across ten awards, a testament to their dedication and hard work.
When the world turned upside down in 2020, the squadron adapted swiftly, hosting over 50 virtual parade nights to keep cadets engaged. We even managed to produce a Loo Roll Challenge video – proving that even loo rolls can inspire creativity!
In 2021, we marked our squadron’s 50th anniversary, alongside the RAF Air Cadets’ 80th anniversary, celebrating decades of inspiring youth.
The year 2022 saw another milestone as our President celebrated 60 years with the RAF Air Cadets, and we proudly unveiled a revamped classroom to enhance our cadets’ learning experience. However, we also experienced loss, saying goodbye to Treasurer Stephen Hucker in 2022, and former Civilian Instructors Mary Middleton and Jonnah Jones, as well as President Don Rhodes in 2023. Their contributions to the squadron will never be forgotten, and their legacies live on in our continued success.
This year has been one of innovation and achievement. We introduced a brand-new flight simulator, which has proven so popular that we’re now fundraising for a second one. Additionally, Cadet Flight Sergeant Smith was appointed as RAF Cosford Station Commander’s Cadet for 2024/25, marking the third time in recent years that one of our cadets has earned this prestigious honour.
Mr Phillips’ reflections set the stage for an evening dedicated to celebrating the squadron’s past, present, and future accomplishments.
Throughout the evening, speeches were delivered by several senior cadets, offering insights into key squadron activities, including adventure training, aviation, and community projects. These inspiring talks highlighted the wide-ranging opportunities available within the RAF Air Cadets and the personal growth that comes from embracing them.
Flight Lieutenant Giles Vince, Officer Commanding, shared his reflections on the squadron’s achievements, thanking the cadets, volunteers, and supporters for their dedication. Mr Robert Parry, Chairperson of the Civilian Committee, also addressed the audience, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the squadron’s adult volunteers and trustees.
